Peter and his wife Helen first started trading as Universal Coin Company in 1988 out of the South Melbourne market. From these humble origins the business quickly grew to one of Australia’s leading numismatic firms. It was through the 1990’s and 2000’s Universal also gained a reputation as one of Melbourne’s foremost buyers of gold and silver from both the general public and trade. By 2004 the gold operation was spun off into Gold Merchants International (GMI) and is now Australia’s largest buyer of recyclable gold.
In 2008 Peter acquired Australian Bullion Company (ABC), Australia’s oldest privately owned and most respected bullion companies.
GMI relocated its head office to ABC’s premises at level 10, 227 Collins St Melbourne where it still operates from presently.
In 2012 Peter reopened the Melbourne Mint, 140 years after it originally opened back in 1872. Peter’s vision for the Melbourne Mint is for it to be a premium bullion retailer, resuming the a long standing tradition of the Mint that had more than $100 Billion worth of gold and silver flow through its doors when it originally operated.
